Autobiographical Fiction: Write What You Know (Well Enough to Lie About) with Scott Gould

THIS WORKSHOP IS NOW CLOSED

This short workshop will discuss how to incorporate autobiographical events and anecdotes into a piece of fiction, specifically how to write what you know well enough to lie about. In addition to a short talk about the craft of stealing from real life, there will be a prompt designed to shake loose some memories worthy of fiction.

Saturday, May 19, 10:00 am, Room 203, Greensboro Cultural Center

Writing Compelling Historical Fiction: Turning “Then” Into “Now” with Susan Rivers

Setting a story or novel in the distant past commits a writer to serious research, but more is required than merely replicating fashions and customs. If historical fiction is to be engaging it must create a world for the reader that is compelling and immediate: what happened long ago must read as if it is happening right now. In this workshop, Rivers will share her methods for crafting such a world and will provide writers with exercises to aid them in this process.

Saturday, May 19, 2:00 pm Room 203, Greensboro Cultural Center
