He first turned to writing onboard the USS Yorktown during the Vietnam War and subsequently graduated from Sarah Lawrence College. He is an alum of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop where he was mentored by Stanley Elkin and John Cheever. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Science\, the Fellowship of Southern Writers\, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He has published nine collections of stories\, two novels\, and (with Daniel Wallace) a book of advice.
